Group therapy is based on the theory that many of the difficulties that people experience, such as worries, on-going low mood or negative self-appraisals, often relate to past and/or present relationships. Given humans are ultimately social beings, our experiences in groups are hugely influential; for example, with family, peers, school/work and communities etc. Many individuals struggle in groups, perhaps finding it difficult to speak or maybe often feeling misunderstood. Given the importance of groups in all our lives, group therapy is a powerful medium for insight, connection, belonging, mutual respect and understanding.

Group Therapy is different from individual therapy because many of the helpful events take place between the members of the group rather than solely between the therapist and patient. Unlike individual therapy, there is a range of group members in the therapeutic space who can speak to similar experiences or provide different perspectives. Some members also appreciate there being no pressure to always speak in the group; for much can be gained from listening and reflecting on the experiences that others’ bring.
